What is Portable Appliance Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the in service repeat of the manufacturers safety tests of electrical equipment. Pat testing covers virtually any appliance, machine fixed or portable that plugs into a power source from 110 volts up to 1000 volts. Drills, kettles, toasters, computers, welders, portable water pumps etc all fall into the category of a portable appliance. There are a numerous items that fall within this remit in every office, hospital, hotel workshop, mine etc. All appliances that can be plugged into a power source must be tested periodically to determine whether the appliance is in a safe condition & fit for use.
Why PAT Test?
It is a legal requirement to PAT test appliances under current law, Safety, health & welfare at work, general application regulations SI: 299-2007. Insurance companies are now ensuring customers provide evidence of portable appliance testing results prior to renewal of policies.
The regulation SI: 299-2007 states that:
- Portable equipment is maintained in a manner safe & fit for use.
- It is periodically inspected if sullied by a voltage exceeding 110 volts but not exceeding 1000 volts.
- Is periodically inspected if exposed to conditions causing deteoration liable to result in danger.
- A competent person carries out & certifies that the appliance is fit for use.
- If equipment tested is not safe then it is taken out of service & not used until it is made safe.
